Serie A, the top division in Italian men’s football, voted on Monday against a project to reduce the number of clubs from twenty to eighteen. “The current format with twenty clubs has been confirmed,” it said in a short statement.

According to Italian media, the possible reform was completely voted down during a meeting in Milan. Only Inter, AC Milan, Juventus and AS Roma – clubs that compete at the top every year and are almost always assured of European football – voted in favor, the sixteen other first division teams voted against.
