No player, but an injured ref in Charleroi – Anderlecht: Erik Lambrechts gets the ball in the temple and fears concussion
11 de February, 2024
Anderlecht ended their trip to the Black Country with a win. Charleroi was defeated 1-3 in a match with 13 minutes of extra time. The reason? The leather flew hard against the temple of referee Erik Lambrechts. He was taken to hospital and is suspected of suffering a concussion.
Just when there was nothing to note about the referee’s performance, Thorgan Hazard kicked him off the field: Erik Lambrechts was the unlucky one during Charleroi-Anderlecht. Hazard blindly kicked the ball away from the Anderlecht sixteen, hitting the temple of referee Lambrechts. He went down and was immediately treated by both the medical staff of Anderlecht and Charleroi.
Not knowing where you are
After a few minutes Lambrechts was able to continue again, but less than ten minutes later the ref signaled that it was no longer possible. Because Lambrechts no longer knew where he was, he was taken to the Marie Curie hospital a few kilometers away to be on the safe side because there were fears of a concussion.
After a delay of about thirteen minutes, fourth ref Laurent Willems came between the lines to complete the remaining fifteen minutes – and thirteen minutes of extra time. It was his debut in the first division for the 33-year-old referee. This season he already refereed one match in the Croky Cup and twelve matches in the Challenger Pro League.
