Filippo Inzaghi was fired on Sunday as coach of Salernitana, the red lantern in the Italian top flight. Friday evening’s 1-3 loss against Empoli, another tail team, is his downfall.

The 50-year-old Inzaghi had only started working for the team from Salerno (Campania) since mid-October. The former goalgetter of Juventus and AC Milan then succeeded the Portuguese Paulo Sousa, but under his leadership Salernitana could barely win twice in sixteen league matches.

The board has already appointed a replacement with Fabio Liverani, 47.

With 13 points from 24 matches, Salernitana is in twentieth position at the bottom of Serie A. Udinese, seventeenth and the first non-relegated team, has six more points.
