Asterix Avo Beveren takes the measure of Charleroi in the exciting volleyball cup final

Asterix Avo Beveren won the Belgian Volleyball Cup for women’s teams on Saturday. After a thriller, they took the scalp of Charleroi in the final in the Antwerp Sportpaleis: 3-2 (25-20, 25-18, 25-27, 20-25 and 16-14).

It is the fifth cup trophy for the Waaslanders, the second in a row. In addition, they have 13 cups from Asterix Kieldrecht in the trophy cabinet from before the merger.

Asterix Avo Beveren was a size too big for Charleroi in the first and second set. The Hainauts offered more resistance in the third set. After Asterix failed to cash in two match balls, Charleroi came out on top with 25-27. Charleroi continued its momentum and took set four 20-25. In the tiebreak, Kris Vansnick’s team managed to recover, although it remained very exciting: 16-14.

Last year, Asterix Avo Beveren took the overall victory against Ghent, also after a 3-2 thriller. Charleroi won the cup twice, in 1995 and 2012.

Earlier in the day, Roeselare won the Belgian Cup for the men for the 16th time in club history. In the final, Steven Vanmedegael’s team defeated Menen 3-1.
