The Sportpaleis is open this weekend, not only for basketball with the Belgian Cats, but also for volleyball the place to be. On Saturday, the blue bowl in Merksem will be filled with over 10,000 volleyball fans for the cup finals.

Among the men, Roeselare, so often unapproachable in the competition, is the inevitable favorite. The national champion already has 15 cups, seven of which in the past eight editions, and can succeed himself. The record of the friendly neighbors from Menen is still blank. The border club is clinging to the league victory against Roeselare on the opening match day, even though that was already four months ago.

Heart patient

For the women, Asterix Avo Beveren and Charleroi will compete against each other, the numbers one and two in the competition. At Charleroi, coach Dimitri Piraux will still be on the bench. However, he underwent emergency heart surgery on Monday, but was given the green light by the doctors. A second procedure will follow in a few weeks. After 1995 and 2012, Charleroi can win the cup a third time. Asterix Beveren is going for a fifth victory in eight years and also has thirteen Asterix Kieldrecht cups in its trophy cabinet from before the merger.

The program (Saturday)

• 3.30 pm (men’s final): Decospan Volley Team Menen – Knack Roeselare

• 7 p.m. (women’s final): Asterix Avo Beveren – ES Charleroi Volley (mv)
