Standard remains a club without teeth when away: “It is a combination of many things”

Standard at home or away, it remains a world of difference. In an ice-cold Jan Breydel, the Rouches willingly allowed themselves to be led to the slaughter against a supreme Club Brugge: 2-0. “We have to believe in ourselves more,” says Carl Hoefkens.

A weak shot from Kanga before the break and an attempt from substitute Ohio on Mignolet in the final minute. Standard did not show more than that on Jan Breydel. The Rouches were nowhere offensively. The well-filled visitors’ section was given nothing to warm up about. After Thiago had headed the Bruges team into an early lead, Standard could not at any time give the impression that it was going to cause any problems for the home team.

“That quick goal was exactly what they were looking for,” sighed a disappointed Arnaud Bodart afterwards in the Bruges catacombs. “Our start was far too weak. We started the match as willing victims. From then on, Club Brugge had full control over the match. We ourselves have not shown enough.” Zinckernagel’s 2-0 after the break completely closed the match. Club Brugge was still looking for the 3-0, but Jutgla and substitute Skov Olsen missed the opportunities to further increase the score.

“Feeling like there was more to it”

Not even a plume of smoke remained of the sacred fire with which Standard defeated KRC Genk last week in Bruges. “We do great things at home. We show a completely different face there than on the road. But even without the support of our audience, we must be able to be there as a team,” the Liège goalkeeper added.

When asked about the huge difference between his team’s performance at home and away, Carl Hoefkens could not give us a conclusive answer. “It’s a combination of many things. The most important thing I want to take away from this match is that we have to believe in ourselves more. Yes, we have a young team. And yes, it is not at Club Brugge that we have to get the points. But I don’t want to hide behind that. As Standard we can never be satisfied if we have not given our full chances. Now I leave here with the feeling that there could have been more.”

It is Hoefkens’ task to quickly find an answer at the Liège away complex. Later this week, two vital away matches await Anderlecht for the cup and the league. “We are going to do everything we can to qualify. That starts with the belief that we can win anywhere and against anyone.”
