Roberto Martinez can only meet Belgium with Portugal (if both countries win their group) in the final: “I also hoped that”

Roberto Martinez guided Portugal through the qualifications undefeated, meaning the country is suddenly considered one of the favorites for next year’s European Championships in Germany. In Group F they will face the Czech Republic, Turkey and a country from the play-offs.

“We cannot be dissatisfied with our group,” said the ex-national coach of the Red Devils after the draw. “We have a few extra days to prepare and play in the center of the country. So things are going well in terms of travel. The logistics are good and we are building on that.”

Martinez had also followed Belgium’s draw. “I never look too much at opponents because you never know how things will go in such a tournament. A number three can suddenly be in the semi-finals. The Belgian group also provides extra preparation time and the logistics are also good there. They will be happy with that.”

There will not be a confrontation with Belgium immediately. Both countries can only meet each other in the final at the earliest, provided they both win their group. Otherwise, a clash in the quarter-finals is already possible. “Is that right? I was hoping that it wouldn’t be too early in the tournament,” the Catalan laughed.
