The 2023 tennis season has officially ended for Elise Mertens (WTA 29) since the beginning of November. The semi-finals at the WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico were her last achievement. A well-deserved holiday is therefore more appropriate.
Last week, Mertens posted photos on her Instagram from Barbados, Guadeloupe and Saint Lucia. Nearby islands in the Caribbean Sea. Taking a mud bath was a must. A few days ago, more specifically on November 17, Mertens celebrated her 28th birthday.
In singles, Mertens successfully extended her title in Monastir, Tunisia, and reached the semi-finals in Monterrey this year. In doubles she won alongside the Australian Storm Hunter in Guadalajara and Rome and they became runner-up at Wimbledon. She ends the year at number 2 in the world rankings in doubles. In 2024, Hunter and Mertens will no longer work together. Our compatriot announced after the WTA Finals that “there is a different vision on the court”.
Reunion?
According to tennis website Open Court, it appears that Mertens will play doubles with Su-Wei Hsieh again in the coming year. With the Taiwanese, the Limburg native had his heyday in 2021 with a final victory on the sacred grass of Wimbledon, the American Indian Wells and they were runner-up at the WTA Finals that same year.(JH)
