The four previous confrontations with Serbia were all high-stakes matches, this time it is a practice match. Both countries still have to compete on the final day of the European Championship qualifications the following weekend. The Red Devils want to secure the group win and top seed status at the draw with a victory against the tough Azerbaijan, while Serbia is close to qualifying. Provided they win in the home match on the final day against the Red Lantern and the already eliminated Bulgaria, they can also book their tickets.
The Belgians only lost one of the previous confrontations and that was the first match between the two countries. In the qualifications for the 2008 European Championship, they lost 1-0 in Belgrade in 2006. The revenge followed a year later, with a 3-2 home win. Ultimately, both countries did not reach the final round. A memorable match followed in October 2012, in the World Cup qualifiers in Brazil. It became one of the first reference matches of the then budding Golden Generation, which won 0-3 in a soaking wet Belgrade under the direction of Kevin De Bruyne. Christian Benteke, KDB and substitute Kevin Mirallas then took care of the Belgian goals. A year later, on a summer evening, the home match was also narrowly won 2-1, after goals from De Bruyne and Marouane Fellaini again, putting the Devils in line for qualification. This was also enforced in Croatia that autumn and the Belgians were allowed to go to a major tournament for the first time in twelve years. In the ten following years there were no more international matches between the two countries.
