The father of Liverpool striker Luis Díaz was released by his captors in Bogota on Thursday. Guerrilla movement ELN kidnapped the parents of the Colombian footballer about two weeks ago. His mother managed to escape quickly, but father Luis Manuel Díaz had been held for a week and a half in the north of the South American country.

This difficult period came to an end for Diaz’s family on Thursday. The father received an emotional welcome from his family and friends upon his return.

Earlier in the week, Díaz appealed to the kidnappers to release his father. Despite the situation, he still played for Liverpool on Sunday. He scored the equalizer (1-1) as a substitute against Luton Town in injury time. Also on Thursday, shortly after the news of the release, Diaz played in the Europa League visiting Toulouse (3-2 defeat).

Kidnappers arrested

The suspected kidnappers have been arrested. This concerns four arrests, Colombian police chief William Salamanca reported. The arrests were made possible thanks to cooperation between the Colombian and British authorities.
