“You’re lying again”: Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi forces journalist to make an emotional apology with a message on Instagram

Lionel Messi won his eighth Ballon d’Or on Monday. The Argentinian world star shared some images of this on his Instagram account. But that wasn’t the only thing.

Messi also shared a story by journalist Gerard Romero, known for covering FC Barcelona. According to him, the Argentinian and Barça president Joan Laporta had a conversation after the ceremony in Paris. It was also discussed when the Catalan top club should plan a tribute for Messi, who won everything with Barcelona.

Apparently that was not at all to the world champion’s liking. Messi – who left the Blaugrana amid a row – even found it necessary to debunk the ‘fake news’, which he does not do very often. At least not openly. “You’re lying again,” he wrote on Instagram.

The message reached Romero, who quickly posted an apology. “A thousand apologies to everyone and a thousand more,” the journalist said to his 1.2 million followers on X/Twitter. “I’ve been fooled again about something regarding Leo. I’m not learning, I’m sorry. This is really f*cked up. I’ll accept whatever you guys throw at me today. I promise we will work to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
