Lionel Messi dedicates eighth golden ball to Diego Maradona: “Gift to the entire Argentina team”

Lionel Messi received the Golden Ball, the most prestigious individual football trophy, on Monday evening at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. The 36-year-old Argentinian wins the trophy for the eighth time. Messi enjoyed the moment and thanked his teammates extensively, especially with the Argentina national team with which he won the world title at the end of 2022.

“It’s nice to stand here again and enjoy this moment,” Messi said as he collected the trophy. “It is a gift to the entire Argentina team for what we have achieved: winning the World Cup and realizing my dream. I could never have imagined developing this career.”

He dedicated his trophy to Argentine football legend Diego Maradona, who would have celebrated his 63rd birthday on Monday but died in November 2020. “Congratulations Diego. This is for you too.” Messi also satisfied the Barcelona fans at the press conference afterwards by once again expressing his love for the club: “Barça is the best club in the world.”
