Asterix Avo Beveren wins the first match in the first qualifying round of the Champions League: “This is good for the entire group”

Volleyball Preliminary Round Champions League (v) OK Gacko – Asterix Avo Beveren 0-3

In the first preliminary round of the CEV Champions League, Asterix Avo Beveren easily beat OK Gacko (0-3). The champion of Bosnia-Herzegovina was only able to make a fist in the second set, in which Gacko even created a six-point gap, but afterwards the barrel was completely empty. The Waaslanders quickly waltzed to victory in Zagreb, encouraged by thirty supporters who traveled with them.

Gacko immediately had to chase in the first set. Iris Vos and Manon Stragier immediately handed over their business cards. Halfway through the second set, Asterix Avo seemed to have to relinquish the role, but Anna Koulberg, Laura Overwater and again the fast-scoring Iris Vos put things in order. Afterwards the Bosnian spring broke.

“The entire group is pleased to be able to win this first match in the Champions League,” said Kris Vansnick. “However, we also have to be realistic, because we know that OK Gacko is the least strong opponent in the group. Yet I have become a bit wiser. For example, I saw a strong Iris Vos at times. In the second set we had to chase for a long time, but thanks to good raids – in which the bank proved its worth – we managed to straighten out the lopsided situation.”

After their own match, the group could watch the Mladost Zagreb-OK Herceg Novi match. “It will be interesting to see the upcoming opponents at work,” Vansnick continued. “Herceg Novi is already stronger than last year. Vasileva and Veltman are clearly reinforcements. Still, I think we have a chance to win on Saturday. Friday evening’s match against Zagreb will be slightly different. Mihaljevic is a left-handed opposite who scored seventeen points. We will have our hands full with it, but Zagreb is also a well-balanced team. It is a well-oiled whole. We, on the other hand, still have to work on our teamwork. Furthermore, I am still looking for the best Kaat Cos. But come on, it’s still early in the season.”

“We now have two more chances to advance to the second qualifying round,” Vansnick concluded. “If we win against Zagreb, it could already be settled on Friday evening. If we get the short end of the stick against Zagreb, we will get another chance against Herceg Novi on Saturday. Anyway, we want to survive at least this first qualifying round.”
