Sevilla has announced Uruguayan Diego Alonso, his country’s national coach at the World Cup in Qatar, as coach until the end of the season. He takes over from the dismissed José Luis Mendilibar and is Sevilla’s fourth coach in just over a year.

It is remarkable that Alonso is only on his first assignment as a coach in Europe. As a player he played football for Valencia, Atlético Madrid, Racing Santander and Málaga.

Alonso’s appointment is seen as a gamble in Spain. Sevilla are currently fourteenth in La Liga with 8 points from 8 games. In the Champions League, Sevilla drew twice (1-1 at home against Lens, 2-2 at PSV, ed.). With Real Madrid on Sunday and Arsenal on Tuesday as the next opponents, he will immediately be presented with two big assignments.

In addition to being national coach of Uruguay (2021-2023), Alonso was also coach of Inter Miami and clubs in Uruguay, Paraguay and Mexico.
