VAR blunder in Premier League continues to reverberate: Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp wants replay against Tottenham (against his better judgement)

Liverpool will take on Union Sint-Gillis in the Europa League tomorrow/Thursday, but The Reds are still very angry after Saturday’s 2-1 league match loss against Tottenham. Coach Jürgen Klopp believes that the game against Spurs should be replayed after the striking VAR blunder that cost Liverpool the opening goal.

Luis Diaz gave Liverpool the lead after 34 minutes in London on Saturday. However, the Colombian attacker’s goal was disallowed by the match officials for offside. That turned out to be unjustified. The VAR should have intervened and effectively checked the images, but due to an unlikely miscommunication the decision was not corrected. Afterwards, referee association PGMOL admitted the mistake. In the meantime, an audio conversation between the various referees also appeared during the game phase.

“The audio fragment does not change the matter at all,” Klopp said at a press conference. “It’s a clear mistake. I think there should be solutions for this, in my opinion there should be a replay. It will probably not come to that, as it would set a precedent. But this is unprecedented, it has never happened before.”

“I am used to wrong and difficult decisions, but something like this has never happened and that is why I think a replay is the right thing to do,” reiterated the German T1.
