Just like last year, Team World won the Laver Cup in Vancouver, Canada. Coach John McEnroe’s team clearly defeated Björn Borg’s European team: 13-2.
At the start of the third and final day, Team Wereld was almost certain of final victory. Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Francisco Cerundolo and Félix Auger-Aliassime had already provided the reassuring 10-2 lead. As a result, McEnroe’s troops only needed one additional victory to once again lift the Laver Cup. A win on Sunday yielded 3 points and a total of 13 immediately meant the final win.
Shelton, a semi-finalist at the last US Open, secured the final triumph alongside his American compatriot Tiafoe after a victory in the doubles against Andrey Rublev and Hubert Hurkacz: 7-6 and 7-6.
The Laver Cup, named after the legendary Rod Laver, was launched in 2017 and was easily won in the first four editions by the predominantly stronger Team Europe. Last year, the edition that marked the farewell of legend Roger Federer, Team World already managed to break its hegemony.
