Elise Mertens and Storm Hunter won the WTA-1000 tournament in Guadalajara on Saturday. The Belgian-Australian duo, first seed in Mexico, won in three sets (3-6, 6-2 and 10-4) against the Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and the New Zealand Erin Routliffe.

For Elise Mertens it was the 30th doubles final on the WTA circuit. The Limburg native now has 18 doubles titles to her name. She also won the tournament in Rome this year with Storm Hunter. After this victory, Mertens rises again to first place in the doubles ranking. Her doubles partner is in second place. It is already the third time in her career that Mertens has been number one.

In some cases she did not reach the sixteenth final. Mertens, the thirteenth seed, lost in the second round to Canadian Leylah Fernandez (WTA 74), former finalist at the 2021 US Open, in two sets: 6-3 and 6-4. The Limburg woman had to call on the physiotherapist at 5-2 for the Canadian because her right shoulder was bothering her. After that, Mertens failed to turn the match in her favor. It is not the first time this year that Mertens has suffered a shoulder injury.
