Sam Vines had to swallow hard when Antwerp’s European list appeared on the UEFA website. Due to an administrative error, the American was left out. On Tuesday, just before the clash with FC Barcelona, Vines responded for the first time.
Vines’ place was unintentionally taken by Bjorn Engels. “Everyone wants to be on that list, so he is disappointed,” coach Mark van Bommel previously said about the matter. “Sam is now recovering and we cannot estimate how long he will be out, but normally he should be fit before the end of the group stage.”
Vines will be the first supporter for the Great Old, but he is very disappointed. “Qualifying for the group stage of the Champions League for the first time in Antwerp’s history is an achievement we can all be proud of,” the defender said on Instagram. “Although I had hoped to be standing next to my teammates, I am extremely excited about this great opportunity for them. I will support the team wherever I am.”
“Many people have asked me about the mistake that was made that prevented me from being included in this historic selection,” Vines continues. “I’m still waiting for answers. I understand that mistakes can be made, but no one has been able to provide me or my entourage with the necessary details. However, I love this club and city, and hope to push us to new heights. I appreciate all the support and hope to see you on the field again soon. Good luck guys!”
