Craig Cathcart (34) has decided to stop playing football. The Northern Irishman was announced at KV Kortrijk on the penultimate day of the transfer summer, but has now quit.
This is what it sounded like at the beginning of September: “KV Kortrijk remains very active in the last days of the summer mercato. It presented Craig Cathcart on Tuesday. The central defender signed a one-year contract at the Guldenspoorstadion, with the option for an additional season. The 34-year-old Cathcart, an experienced Northern Ireland international, must take on a leadership role at the heart of Kortrijk’s defense.”
But now the man who was captain of the Northern Ireland national team earlier this year is hanging up his football boots. Cathcart – who did not make a single appearance for the West Flemish team – misses his children and is afraid of getting injured. Besides, he simply wouldn’t feel like playing the game anymore.
He trained at Manchester United and was active for years at Blackpool and Watford in the Premier League and Championship. The Northern Irishman also played thirteen times for Antwerp.
