After the end of FC Twente-Ajax, another incident occurred at the team bus of the Amsterdam team. Brian Brobbey (21) was racially abused by a spectator behind the crowd barriers when entering the bus.

The perpetrator was immediately grabbed by the collar and arrested. FC Twente technical director Arnold Bruggink immediately apologized for the incident in the Ajax player bus. Ajax files a complaint against the FC Twente supporter.

“After the match, an Ajax player was subjected to racist treatment,” reports FC Twente. “The identity of the perpetrator has been established. Ajax is going to press charges. The person in question will be criminally prosecuted and will immediately receive a stadium ban. Arnold Bruggink has apologized on behalf of FC Twente in the Ajax player bus. We think it’s terrible that this happened after the match, this does not suit FC Twente.”

Berghuis

The incident is not an isolated incident. After the previous edition of FC Twente-Ajax – at the end of last season – insults were also leveled at the Ajax players, after which Steven Berghuis dealt a blow. The Ajax midfielder received a three-match suspension and was available for the Eredivisie for the first time in Enschede.

After the 3-1 defeat against FC Twente, Berghuis looked back on that incident at the end of last season in front of the ESPN camera. “A bit fifty-fifty. It also comes to an end as to what people can shout at you. Punishments should be much harsher for this. Everything is possible too easily. That was enough for me then. I made that choice then and then I have to deal with the blisters. It was also the emotion of that time. On the other hand, I harm myself, the team and the club. That shouldn’t have happened. I hope that the government in the Netherlands will take tougher action. It is a social problem. Not just in football. If you go shopping in the supermarket and you are yelled at three or four times while you are taking spinach from the shelf, you don’t like that. I think that players should be protected much more, to be honest.”
