Michael Geerts reaches second round of Challenger Columbus, Yanina Wickmayer takes first hurdle in doubles WTA Guadalajara

Michael Geerts (ATP 268) qualified for the eighth finals of the Challenger tournament in Columbus, America (hard/80,000 dollars) on Monday. Yanina Wickmayer has again qualified for the second round of the WTA 1,000 tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico (hard/2,788,468 dollars).

Geerts defeated the American Mitchell Krueger (ATP 263) in the first round in two sets: 7-5 and 6-2. The match lasted an hour and a half. Our compatriot is the only Belgian on the table in Ohio.

In the eighth finals, Geerts will again play against an American, the winner of the match between second seed Denis Kudla (ATP 205) and qualifier Strong Kirchmeier (ATP 402).

The 28-year-old Antwerp native will also compete in doubles in Columbus. He forms a tandem with the American Vasil Kirkov. They open against the Japanese James Trotter and the American Robert Cash.

Wickmayer also advances in doubles in Mexico

Wickmayer defeated Kazakh Anna Danilina and Chinese Zhaoxuan Yang, the seventh seed, in the first round alongside American Alycia Parks, 7-6 (7/5), 2-6 and 10/7 in the super tiebreak. The match lasted 1 hour and 39 minutes.

The opposition in the next round is not yet known. The 33-year-old Wickmayer (WTA 70) lost in the first round of the singles in Guadalajara in a Belgian match against Elise Mertens (WTA 29). The Limburg woman won in two sets (7-6 (7/4) and 6-2).
