A solution is in the works for Birger Verstraete (29). The defensive midfielder who is surplus to requirements at Antwerp moves to Aris Thessaloniki, the number eight in the Greek top flight.

Yesterday the three parties reached an agreement on a permanent switch. Tomorrow Verstraete will fly to Greece to sign a two-year contract. Standard also beckoned to Verstraete, but a move to Liège ultimately did not follow.

In the summer of 2020, Verstraete exchanged the German FC Köln for Antwerp. He played a total of 81 games for the Great Old. Since the arrival of Mark van Bommel, the one-time Red Devil has not played in Deurne-Noord. Last season, Verstraete was loaned to KV Mechelen. In recent months he has trained with the Young Reds, the promises of the national champion.
