New Zealand police have arrested a man (34) on suspicion of arson at the Pullman hotel in Auckland. The players and staff of the New Zealand national team stay there during the Women’s World Cup. A fire broke out in the hotel on Saturday evening, after which the selection had to be evacuated. Fortunately no one was injured.
The fire broke out around 8 p.m. (local time) on Saturday night. The fire was quickly extinguished with eight fire trucks, according to a spokeswoman. The New Zealand players would be led out through a stairwell through thick smoke.
The identity of the man has not yet been released by police. It is clear that it concerns someone who lives in New Zealand. The man will appear before a magistrate on Monday. It is currently unclear whether the incident has a link to the World Cup.
