Elise Mertens (WTA-30) gave Belgium a 1-0 lead in the Hopman Cup match against Spain on Friday in Nice, France. She defeated Rebeka Masarova (WTA-72) in 1 hour and 58 minutes 7-6 (7/3), 2-6 and 10-5.
In the second match, David Goffin (ATP-11) faces world number one Carlos Alcaraz. This is followed by a mixed doubles match.
On Thursday, the Belgians suffered a 2-1 defeat against the Croatians Donna Vekic (WTA-22) and Borna Coric (ATP-15), who will be playing Spain on Saturday. The group winner will face Switzerland or France in the final on Sunday. Those countries have both already beaten Denmark and will compete in a direct duel for group win. After the women’s singles, France is ahead. Alizé Cornet (WTA-68) defeated Céline Naef (WTA-157) 1-6, 6-3 and 10-8. Richard Gasquet (ATP-49) and Leandro Riedi (ATP-160) play the men’s singles.
