Young Red Flames go down against the Netherlands in the first group match at the European Championship in their own country

The young Red Flames started the U19 European Championship in their own country with a defeat. In Leuven, Belgium lost 0-3 to the Netherlands on Tuesday evening.

The Orange took the lead at Den Dreef just before half an hour. Hanna Huizenga, the Dutch number 9, headed a blocked shot over goalkeeper Jorijn Covent from close range.

After the break, Belgium went looking for the equalizer, but it was the Netherlands that scored a second time in the 55th minute. After a lesser kick from the Belgian goalkeeper, Ziva Henry scored the 0-2 in the top corner.

Five minutes before the end, the Flames had to swallow a third, clumsy goal. After a too short pass from Alixe Bosteels on Covent, substitute Danique Tolhoek took advantage to easily tap in the 0-3.

Earlier in the day, Germany beat Austria 6-0 in the other group A match in Tubize.

Germany awaits on Friday

On Friday (5.30 pm) the young Flames, who are coached by Xavier Donnay, will take on Germany in the Stade Leburton in Tubize. Next Monday (July 24) a final group match against Austria awaits in La Louvière. A place in the top two provides a ticket for the semi-finals.

In group B, France won 0-1 against the Czech Republic in La Louvière on Tuesday and defending champion Spain in Tubize was too strong for Iceland 0-3.
