WIMBLEDON. Elise Mertens takes first hurdle in doubles, topseeds Medvedev and Rune push through

Mertens and Hunter are joint third seed in doubles. In the second round, they will meet the winners of the duel between the Chilean Alexa Guarachi and the New Zealand Erin Routliffe on the one hand and the Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu and the Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina on the other. That party is scheduled for later Friday.

Elise Mertens won the doubles at Wimbledon in 2021, alongside Taiwanese Hsieh Su-Wei. Last year she was a losing finalist together with the Chinese Zhang Shuai.

On Thursday, Elise Mertens (WTA 28) lost her second round singles match on the London grass in three sets (6-1, 1-6 and 6-1) to the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (WTA 76), the former number three of the world. Besides Mertens, Maryna Zanevska (WTA 88), Greet Minnen (WTA 123), Yanina Wickmayer (WTA 112) and Ysaline Bonaventure (WTA 91) were also on the main draw in singles, but they all fell in the opening round.

Medvedev to third round without losing a set

The Russian Daniil Medvedev (ATP 3) has easily qualified for the third round at Wimbledon on Friday. The third seed went ahead of Frenchman Adrian Mannarino (ATP 35) in three sets in the second round: twice 6-3 and 7-6 (7/5) after 2 hours and 24 minutes. The game had already started on Thursday-evening, but then had to be stopped due to darkness.

The Russian storage gun remains flawless on the London grass, because earlier this week he also settled in three sets with twenty-year-old Briton Arthur Fery (ATP 391). No impregnable hurdle awaits in the third round with the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (ATP 67).

For the time being, his place in the eighth finals in 2021 is Medvedev’s best result on the London grass. The Russian has already reached at least the quarterfinals in the three other grand slam tournaments. With the US Open in 2021, there is one grand slam tournament on his honors list. A year earlier he had won the ATP Finals.

Holger Rune is also allowed to continue one round

The Danish number six in the world settled in the second round on Court 3 in three sets with Spaniard Roberto Carbales Baena (ATP 57): 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) and 6-4 after 2 hours and 37 minutes.

In the next round, Rune will face the winner of the duel between the Dutchman Botic Van De Zandschulp (ATP 44) and the Spanish 31st seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ATP 34).

Two-time Wimbledon winner Kvitova smoothly into the third round

Ninth seed Petra Kvitova (WTA 9) has easily qualified for the third round at Wimbledon, the third grand slam tournament of the season, on Friday.

On Court 2 in the British capital London, she awarded the Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich (WTA 69) only four games in the second round: twice 6-2 after 1 hour and 14 minutes.

In the opening round, Kvitova had passed Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in three sets on Wednesday. In the third round, she will soon face the winner of the duel between Serbian qualifier Natalija Stevanovic (WTA 225) and German lucky loser Tamara Korpatsch (WTA 122).

The now 33-year-old Kvitova won Wimbledon twice (2011 and 2014). It is also the only grand slam tournament on her honors list. At the Australian Open she lost the final in 2019, at Roland Garros two semifinals (2012 and 2020) are her best result. At the US Open, she never got past the quarterfinals.

In London she is on the main draw for the fifteenth time in a row. Last year she went out in the third round against Spain’s Paula Badosa. With the prestigious Miami and Berlin, she has already won two WTA tournaments this year.
