Caring for Elise Mertens just before Wimbledon: hip problem forces her to give up in Eastbourne

Elise Mertens (WTA 28) gave up on Monday with hip pain in the first round of the WTA tournament in Eastbourne in Great Britain (grass / $ 780,637).

Less than a week before Wimbledon, Mertens faced Czech Karolina Pliskova (WTA 18), former world No. 1. Our compatriot won the first set 7-6 (7/3), after which she lost the second set 3-6. When Pliskova led 0-3 in the third set, Mertens threw in the towel.

The WTA told Belga that the Belgian number 1 complained of pain in the left hip. After her defeat in the eighth finals of Roland Garros on June 4, Mertens already talked about that inconvenience. That was the last singles match she played until now. She has since completed two more doubles matches. Two weeks ago, Mertens canceled her first round match in the singles in Rosmalen, the Netherlands, because of problems with her back. With Wimbledon just around the corner, Mertens’ physical condition is therefore worrying.
