The French top club Olympique Marseille has appointed Spaniard Marcelino as the new head coach. He succeeds the Croat Igor Tudor in the South of France.

It will be 57-year-old Marcelino’s first coaching job outside the Spanish borders. In recent seasons, he has held sway at Athletic Bilbao (2021-2022) and Valencia (2017-2019), winning the Copa del Rey and qualifying for the Champions League twice. Bilbao won the Supercopa under his leadership, the first trophy for the Basque club since 1984. He was also named Coach of the Year in Spain three times over the years. Marseille finished third in the French top division last year. It may try to qualify for the group stage through the preliminary rounds of the Champions League.
