The Nations League is in its third edition. Portugal won the first year in 2019 (the Netherlands then came second), France was the best in 2021. That year, the Red Devils reached the Final Four, but after consecutive defeats in the semi-finals against France (2-3) and small final against Italy (1-2), the Belgians of then national coach Roberto Martinez finished fourth.
The group stage of the Nations League was scheduled a while ago, just before the World Cup in Qatar last November and December. The four participating countries of the Final Four then each won their group in the A division. The Netherlands made it in its group for the Red Devils, Poland and Wales. The Orange triumphed in both Derbies of the Low Countries: 1-4 in the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels and 1-0 in Amsterdam. Opponent Croatia, which meanwhile won bronze at the World Cup in Qatar, was ahead of Denmark, a disappointing France and Austria in its group.
Italy triumphed in the group of death. A surprisingly strong Hungary finished second after Gli Azzurri, ahead of Germany and England who dropped to the B division. Spain also had quite a tough group to choose from. La Roja had to deal with Portugal, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.
