“My hamstring is broken”: Kevin De Bruyne celebrates Champions League triumph with Manchester City despite a downer

“It is what it is”, the Red Devil responded briefly. “I did everything I could to be ready for this and gave it my all, but my hamstring is broken. However, this trophy is incredible, what a season. I don’t know what to say.”

But he was able to jump again when the cup with the big ears was raised in the air by Ilkay Gündogan. A little later, De Bruyne was allowed to do the same, to the great joy of the fans who traveled along. His kids and wife Michèle were also there in Istanbul.

“This club really deserves this”

“This is a dream come true,” said Manchester City midfielder Rodri, author of the only goal in the 68th minute, after the 1-0 win in the Champions League final against Inter Milan.

“We really deserved it. Not only the players, also the fans, everyone at and around the club. I myself have only been playing for City for four years, but there are people who have been waiting for this for thirty or forty years. I am so glad we can give them this. We’ve come so close in recent years, but it’s so hard to win this. Also today we bumped into a very strong opponent. They defended incredibly well. Fortunately, I was able to score once. The first half I didn’t play well at all, really bad, but I was able to recharge during the break to do better. That also shows our resilience and our mentality.”

“It’s a fairy tale, I’m a happy person now,” said City captain Ilkay Gundogan. “I have waited so long for this. It is a privilege to be captain of this club and to work with a manager like Pep Guardiola. I am part of perhaps the most beautiful club in the world. I am proud of that.”

“All my life I’ve worked for this,” said winger Jack Grealish. “Winning the title, the cup and the Champions League is very special. When I think of all the people who helped me achieve this, my family, it brings tears to my eyes. I owe them a huge debt of gratitude. Just like Pep Guardiola, who always believed in me. The man is a genius and I told him so.”
