Title candidate Elena Rybakina gives ill forfeit for third round at Roland Garros: “Right decision”

Fourth seed Elena Rybakina (WTA 4) has forfeited her third round match at Roland Garros on Saturday. She would compete against the Spanish Sara Sorribes Tormo (WTA 132).

Rybakina warmed up on Saturday morning, but decided to cancel shortly before the match at Court Philippe-Chatrier because she felt ill. “It’s the only right decision because it’s hard to play like that,” the tennis star explained. “I am very disappointed but such is life. I wanted to give 100 percent, but I’m anything but 100 percent myself.”

The 23-year-old Kazakh, who was born in Moscow, is the reigning Wimbledon champion and losing finalist at the last Australian Open. In Paris, a quarter-final (in 2021) is her best result so far. She came to Roland Garros with a tournament victory in Rome and was one of the title contenders.

Sara Sorribes Tormo pushes through to the eighth finals without playing, a first in a grand slam tournament for the 26-year-old Spanish. Her next opponent will be the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova (WTA 23) or the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia (WTA 14).
