On Tuesday night, several international matches were again played in South America with a view to the 2026 World Cup. An overview.

Argentina could again count 100% on Lionel Messi in Peru. He has been struggling with a muscle injury in recent weeks, but has now recovered from it. Messi immediately celebrated with two goals, one in each half: 0-2 and three points. Argentina is in the lead with 12 points after four match days.

The fact that the 36-year-old playmaker once again fooled his opponents only confirms that he is back to his old self again. Moreover, Messi now has yet another record to his name. Thanks to his two goals, he becomes the all-time top scorer in the South American World Cup qualifiers with 31 hits. Messi takes over from Luis Suarez, who has already scored 29 for Uruguay.

Worried about Neymar

Brazil returned scoreless from the Uruguayan capital Montevideo. Darwin Nunez and Nicolas De La Cruz ensure the 2-0 home victory. For the Brazilians, this is only the first loss in a World Cup qualifying campaign since 2015. Uruguay is now in second place together with Brazil with seven units.

Although the sporting result will not be the biggest concern of the Brazilian Selecao. Neymar had to be carried off the field on a stretcher during extra time in the first half after a seemingly innocent duel. The Al-Hilal player was moved to tears and immediately clutched his knee.

The 31-year-old Brazilian was able to leave the stadium on his own with the necessary support. It is currently unclear how serious the (knee) injury can be taken. Neymar had only just recovered from an ankle injury that kept him out for six months.
