PSV defender takes red in practice match against Hamburg, but Germans want to play eleven against eleven and then solve it in an inventive way

The practice match between PSV and Hamburg was one that did not go without a hitch. Or rather, we should say: practice matches. A red card from PSV defender André Ramalho caused a lot of chaos, but that was easily resolved.

Many football competitions are currently having a winter break and a practice match is sometimes played on the stages between two teams that stay in the same area. That was also the case in Spain on Sunday, where a practice match between PSV and Hamburg was scheduled. After 31 minutes, PSV defender André Ramalho received a red card and PSV had to rest with ten men (and with the score 2-2).

But at Hamburg they preferred to play eleven against eleven and the referee had no problem with that, but the referee committee intervened: PSV would also play with ten men in the second half.

But that was without the inventiveness of the teams. They decided to start a new match with eleven against eleven of, yes, 45 minutes. And who was on PSV’s defense? Indeed, Ramalho. Handily solved, if you ask us. For the sake of completeness: Ramalho stood his ground in the second half/match and contributed to the 0-0 final score.

PSV coach: “The whole point of such a practice match is then somewhat lost”

“Initially we were allowed to play eleven against eleven again in the second half, without Ramalho. Then the referee boss was called and he said that this was not allowed. Then the HSV coach did not want to continue playing. Ultimately, there was a new match,” says PSV coach Peter Bosz.

The PSV coach wanted to play ten against eleven. “We haven’t played with ten men yet this season, so I thought let’s take advantage of that now. We had to make the best of it. However, in the end the whole point of such a practice match is somewhat lost. If I play against a team that gets a red card, I would also like to continue with 22 men.’
