Former top goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar (52), who played for the Netherlands, Ajax, Juventus and Manchester United, among others, suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on holiday on a Croatian island. He is currently in intensive care in a local hospital and his condition is stable, various Dutch media report.

Van der Sar stepped down at the end of May as general manager of Ajax, the club with which he achieved many successes as a goalkeeper. He indicated that he was completely exhausted after leading the club for 10.5 years and having received a lot of criticism in recent months.

“I now need to distance myself, relax and do other things,” Van der Sar said at the time.

After his playing career, Van der Sar returned to Ajax in January 2013, where he first served as a director and became general manager in November 2016.
