The Bruges glass is half full, despite a late goal and a penalty not called: “We can dream of the final”

You don’t give anything away, you hardly come under pressure, but you still go to the Dudenpark with your butt clenched: with a 2-1 against Union, Club Brugge is still a long way from reaching the Heysel. However, Ronny Deila emphasized the positive: “We are one goal ahead.”

Junior Verbeeke and Pieter-Jan Calcoen

It must be said: there was little to argue against Ronny Deila’s explanation – Club effectively goes to the return with an advantage. But we also noticed disappointment among the players. Logical, given that late 2-1 after an otherwise carefree match. Casper Nielsen was disappointed. “We had everything under control,” the Dane analyzed. “We tried to play the game calmly and maintain the 2-0 score, but things are a bit disappointing at the moment. It came a bit out of the blue. 3-0 was more deserved than 2-1.”

However, Nielsen did not just want to mourn Machida’s goal: “We win and play a good match. Ultimately, we will go to Brussels with an advantage.”

Ferran Jutglà also thought so, who provided the assist for the 1-0 and made it 2-0 himself. “That goal makes us angry, it creates a completely different situation. We have to make sure this doesn’t happen again, but we are winning and we have to finish it now. We can dream of the final.”

Criticism of VAR

Deila regretted that it had not yet arrived. He did not blame his team for anything, praised the good performance, but spontaneously mentioned the penalty phase with Hans Vanaken at the press conference – that could have been the 3-0. “I don’t understand why that ball didn’t hit the spot. I saw the images, it was clear to me. The VAR should always have intervened. There should have been a red card at Antwerp (for Janssen, ed.), there was that incorrectly disallowed goal at Mechelen… It’s a lot. Oh well, we had signed up for this result in advance. Union has not lost in its own country since September. We are definitely in a good situation.”

Finally, Deila was asked by a Walloon colleague whether he wanted to provoke Union with Homma’s contribution? The Japanese denied Union the title last season with his goal on the final match day. Deila: “Not at all. I just needed Homma. He did well.”
