Heidenheim spectacularly secured promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time ever on the last day of the second Bundesliga. It fell 2-0 after the break against the already relegated Jahn Regensburg, but went 2-3 thanks to two goals in stoppage time.

A questionable penalty in the 93rd minute and a winning goal in the 99th minute, scored by Tim Kleindienst (ex-AA Gent), took Heidenheim from hell to heaven. It even crowned itself champion with 67 points. Darmstadt, which was promoted earlier this month, finished second with the same points total.
As a result, Jean-Luc Dompé has to play a jump-off duel with Hamburg. Dompé scored the only goal for HSV in the match at Sandhausen, but that turned out not to be enough for direct promotion. HSV will eventually meet Stuttgart in the promotion-relegation game. (ssg)
