Schreuder was fired from Ajax at the end of January due to disappointing results. Previously, the former midfielder was head coach at FC Twente, Hoffenheim and Club Brugge. At the Belgian champion, he was named earlier this season as successor to Carl Hoefkens, but both parties were unable to resolve it at the time.

In 2018, Al Ain reached the final of the Club World Cup. Real Madrid was too strong 4-1.
