Zeno Debast (19) has responded for the first time to his pre-selection for the European Championship under 21. National coach of the Young Devils Jacky Mathijssen would like to have Anderlecht’s central defender available during the tournament. And Debast also seems to like it.

“I like both”, Debast responded to his pre-selection in an interview. “I am ready to play for both the first team and the U21,” says the nineteen-year-old central defender. He sees how much quality there is in the selection of the Young Devils and also knows many of those guys. “There are people my age, some younger, others a little older. It’s a good mix of some good players, so I’m looking forward to it”, says an enthusiastic Zeno Debast.

Zeno Debast was called up for the first time for the Red Devils by then national coach Roberto Martinez for the World Cup in Qatar. The defender of Anderlecht made his debut in the Nations League against Wales and was also allowed to play 90 minutes against the Netherlands, just like in the exhibition match against Egypt just before the start of the tournament. Debast was also called up during the previous international break by Domenico Tedesco, who took over from Martinez in our national team. However, he did not act then.

Anderlecht’s talent is not the only ‘adult’ Red Devil currently called up by Jacky Mathijssen. Charles de Ketelaere, who is going through a difficult first season at AC Milan, can also join the final selection of the Young Devils.

The European Championship will be played in Georgia and Romania. The Belgian U21s will play against the Dutch Juniors for the first time on June 21.
