AA Gent takes its first win in the Conference League against Maccabi Tel Aviv thanks to two goals from jubilant Tarik Tissoudali

AA Gent is in the lead in group B of the Conference League after two match days. The Buffaloes deservedly won against Maccabi Tel Aviv and thus partly compensated for the loss of points on the opening day. A goal from Tissoudali before half time and one in the closing minutes ultimately proved to be enough for the home team, who failed to decide the game early after the break.

As announced, Ghent could not call on Torunarigha, so Vanhaezebrouck was forced to station Brown in the center of the back. Fofana moved again to the left flank, while Gandelman started in midfield – against his compatriots – for the first time. Orban and Tissoudali were then allowed to work in the front line again.

The first Ghent goal opportunity came within the opening fifteen minutes after an excellent infiltration by Gandelman, but Tissoudali just couldn’t make the decision. Ghent clearly wanted to lose points on the first day of play when they visited Zorya Luhansk and that inspired them to launch a first offensive.

Fofana also showed courage on the left and after an excellent opening against Samoise, Maccabi escaped an early deficit for a second time. A little later, Fofana took off again and his cross reached Samoise again, but this time he headed too weakly into the hands of goalkeeper Mishpati. Time for a pinch of magic, Orban thought, but his attempt just missed. The Nigerian was left open, just like Tissoudali, whose attempt went wide a minute later.

Sterile football

Maccabi had very little to offer in return. The Israelis only threatened with quick counter-punching after Ghent’s loss of possession. Yet Roef was hardly tested in the first half hour. This created a game of sterile football in which Ghent patiently looked for an opening, but found this increasingly difficult because waste too often crept into the Ghent structure.

Tissoudali infiltrated Maccabi’s sixteen again but still missed the right direction. Still, the Buffaloes went into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Brown and De Sart quickly took a free kick and Tissoudali was suddenly free to approach goalkeeper Mishpati. The Moroccan international, who played his hundredth game in Ghent employment, remained calm and finished calmly: 1-0, the ideal scenario for the home team, which could certainly claim a lead. Before halftime they had more than 60% possession of the ball.

Roef prevents an equalizer

Just after half-time, Maccabi came to sniff around Roef, but we noted the first opportunity again on the other side of the field: Brown took a chance on a corner kick from Kums, but his attempt went just over. The visitors were clearly in favor of Ghent. traveled with the intention of taking a dot back to Tel Aviv. The deficit forced them to be a little more decisive.

All in all, Ghent seemed to be able to withstand the Israeli pressure easily, but when Peretz appeared at the back of the Ghent defense, Roef had to work hard to prevent an equalizer. The Buffaloes immediately responded through De Sart, but his long-distance attempt was turned into a corner by Mishpati.

Ghent clearly continued to dominate the game without flashing, but opportunities were not forthcoming. Halfway through the second period, Vanhaezebrouck brought on Hjulsager instead of Fofana. The top match against Racing Genk awaits on Sunday. You will have to keep an eye out for a counter-shot from Maccabi. At a corner kick, old warrior Zahavi headed wide.

Orban drops 2-0

It was a warning to the Buffaloes. Moments later, Orban had the opportunity to close the game, but on a pass from Kandouss, the Nigerian headed the ball straight at an almost hopeless Mishpati. This phase perfectly illustrated the statements of Vanhaezebrouck, who on Wednesday discussed Orban’s inferior form in detail. Ghent continued to look for the redeeming second goal.

Ghent no longer took unnecessary risks in the final phase, but Orban and Tissoudali were nevertheless given space by the tired Israelis who barely appeared near Roef. Still, it remained quite exciting in the moderately filled KAA Gent Arena. Ultimately the decision was made from the spot: Davida, who had recently come on, pushed Tissoudali to the ground. Tissoudali took responsibility and did not fail: 2-0. Ghent thus takes an important first victory in the group stage of the Conference League, which immediately puts them in the lead.
