Is KRC Genk the next to drop out after AA Gent? It looks very much like that because the Limburgers already have 22 points less than competition leader Union. El Khannouss and co have to prepare for Play-off I. The people of Brussels beat the home team quite easily (0-1) and continue to thunder through the competition like a train.

Union’s victory was undeniable. KRC Genk had barely one goal opportunity worthy of the name in the entire match. Union goalkeeper Moris’ jersey could go back into the equipment case without washing. His defense around Burgess was in charge of the small Genk attack. In the final phase Paintsil had the best chance but he shot wide. However, that was offside.

Genk coach Wouter Vrancken immediately dropped El Khannouss into the team after his adventure at the Africa Cup. Acquisition Nkuba, replacement for the departed Daniel Munoz, was on the bench. He was allowed to come on fifteen minutes before time. The other acquisition Sobol, replacement for Arteaga, who also left, was in the starting line-up. The Ukrainian former Club Brugge player played a very mediocre match. At Union, Terho and Rasmussen remained on the bench this time in favor of Mac Allister and Sadiki.

The first half was a sad affair. After fifteen minutes, the most noteworthy thing was an early yellow card for Union goalkeeper Moris. Referee Erik Lambrechts immediately nipped Union’s sometimes criticized time-wasting in the bud. Not that this was really necessary because the home team played very mediocre football. Especially in an attacking sense. Not much came of it with Bonsu Bah on the left, Paintsil is behind his best form. Bonsu Bah was the only Genk resident to kick on goal in the first half.

Most menacing

Without Union playing well, the league leader was the most dangerous team. Or better: the most threatening. We noted one big opportunity. Puertas, strong again, hit Vandevoordt’s leg. There were still attempts from Nilsson and Amoura, but they only make it into this report because there was not much more to do in the first half.

After rest it was a little better. At least for Union. Because Genk continued to play poor football. Nothing flashy, work football that is not really suited to the glitzy Genk residents last season. El Ouahdi played a solid match, Heynen tried to change course but has also seen better periods. At Union, Puertas was strong again and Amoura was a scourge. When he accelerated, the Genk defense was in awe. Twice the home team was able to save the ball with some fumbling. The third time was a hit. This had nothing to do with speed, on the contrary.

Puertas kicked a free kick with great feeling and Amoura headed in. The smallest man on the field outwitted Vandevoordt at the first post (0-1). Previously, El Ouahdi had already saved Sadiki’s attempt off the line.

KRC Genk pushed further in the final phase, but the competition leader remained standing.
