Quinten Smout (22) will be looking for a second consecutive cup triumph with the Spirou Charleroi basketball team on Sunday afternoon. The opponent in Forest National is Limburg United. “The appetite for a new prize is great,” says the Antwerp resident of the Spirous.

Last year, as a 21-year-old, Smout was briefly on the court when Telenet Giants Antwerp won the Belgian Cup against Ostend. “It was my debut season at the highest level. I thought it was incredible that I could also get a taste of that great competition. That first cup win with the club that trained me, and that in a packed room. It was truly an unforgettable experience.”

Despite an ongoing contract with Giants, the Antwerp native closed the door of the Lotto Arena behind him. “At Charleroi I would have more opportunities with Sam Rotsaert as coach. That's why I signed for the Spirous. In retrospect, that was the right decision. I play an average of nineteen minutes per match in the BNXT League. I gain confidence from the coach, learn a lot during training and am part of a fantastic group of players.”Smout and the Karolos also qualified for Elite Gold, where the top 5 from Belgium and the Netherlands competed against each other. “We completed a strong campaign in the Belgian regular phase and earned our place in the top five. It is important for our young selection that we can now further develop against the top in the Netherlands.”
