It was the second duel between 32-year-old Goffin and 19-year-old Nardi. Last year, the Italian beat the Liege native in the qualifications in Astana in three sets in the first mutual confrontation.

In the second round, Goffin will face the German Alexander Zverev (ATP 22). The Olympic champion is the nineteenth seed free in the first round.

The Serbian Novak Djokovic (ATP 1) defends his title in Rome. Goffin has been killed in the second round each time for the past four years.

The other group includes Denmark, Switzerland and France. The group winner of each of the two groups advances to the final. The final matches will be played on Sunday.

The Hopman Cup is back on the calendar this year for the first time since 2019. All previous editions, since the start in 1989, took place in Perth, Australia. For years, the tournament was the opening of the tennis season and the ‘warm-up’ for the Australian Open. Belgium was once a finalist. In 2011 Justine Henin and Ruben Bemelmans lost the final.

At the end of last year it was announced that the Hopman Cup would return to the calendar in the summer of 2023, with Nice as the new location. The format remains the same: men’s singles, women’s singles and mixed doubles.
