Not very flashy Essevee remains stuck at a draw in Lommel: “We have to be satisfied with this result”

ZULTE / WAREGEM

Thanks to Gano, Zulte Waregem briefly seemed on its way to a flattering victory over closest pursuer Lommel, but in the end Essevee had to settle for a points division. “It was indeed not easy for us, because Lommel often demanded the ball and hurt us,” says Modou Tambedou.

As is often the case this season, Essevee did not get off to a particularly flashy start and it was the home team that immediately took control of the game. Goal opportunities remained rather scarce in the opening quarter. Lommel eagerly claimed possession of the ball, but just like Zulte Waregem, could barely make a fist offensively.

Essevee’s first notable offensive achievement, which could briefly restore the balance, did not happen coincidentally after 20 minutes, when Vossen made a clever dribble but Lommel goalkeeper De Busser converted it into a corner kick. “It was indeed not easy for us, because Lommel often demanded the ball and hurt us,” said Tambedou, who regularly moved from the heart of the defense to midfield.

It was not all that eye-catching what the two teams played together in the Sovereign Stadium. As announced in advance, the first half delivered a show-stopping highlight. Suddenly Lommel, which had a lot of ball possession, turned its nose to the window. Essevee creaked but did not buckle in that oh-so-difficult third quarter.

Gano again

The second half certainly did not immediately bring any improvement for the visitors, but when Machado finally reached the end line and crossed tightly, who else but Gano headed the 0-1 past a hopeless De Busser. “The chances were few, but we showed ourselves very efficiently,” Tambedou added.

Lommel was clearly upset and also got away well when an attempt by Bagan was turned away just before the line. On the other side, Lommel claimed a penalty on the hour mark when Talvitie’s cross ended up against Bagan’s hand, but when De Grand crossed the ball again, Sales reacted slightly faster than Derijck and the Brazilian headed the equalizer straight past Bostyn.

Halfway through the second half, Traoré came on and the young Ivorian immediately caused chaos in the local defense, but Bostyn also had to work hard when Karim cleverly released Sales. The last chance was ultimately for the visitors, but Tambedou headed incomprehensibly wide after a hesitation from De Busser. “I think this is a solid result for us. Call it a good point, and that way we stay in the lead and can put pressure on the competition. From now on we will focus on the cup match against Cercle Brugge on Tuesday,” Tambedou concluded.
