WTA Saint-Malo: Ysaline Bonaventure misses place in quarterfinals

Ysaline Bonaventure (WTA 84) was unable to qualify for the quarterfinals of the WTA125 tournament in Saint-Malo (gravel/$115,000) on Wednesday.

Bonaventure, the fourth seed, lost in the round of 16 against the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (WTA 1,088), a former world number three who is making her comeback after a long break and participates with a wild card, in three sets: 2-6 , 6-4 and 7-6 (7/5). The game lasted 2 hours and 23 minutes.

28-year-old Svitolina pressed the pause button at the end of March 2022. She had been struggling with back pain for quite a long time and said she had psychological problems due to the war in her country. In addition, she became a mother for the first time in mid-October. The partner of the French tennis player Gaël Monfils gave birth to a daughter who was named Skaï. She made her comeback in Charleston early last month.

Maryna Zanevska (WTA 75) was unable to qualify for the quarterfinals earlier on Wednesday. In the second round on the French clay, the third seed did not get past American Katie Volynets (WTA 103). It became 2-6, 6-4 and 7-5. The 29-year-old Zanevska has already won the L’Open 35 de Saint-Malo twice, in 2012 and 2016 when the tournament had a smaller prize pool and the tennis star still played for Ukraine.

Greet Minnen (WTA 173), the third Belgian on the table in Brittany, will compete in the second round against the British Jodie Burrage (WTA 110). In the first round, Minnen knocked out American second seed Claire Liu (WTA 55).
