Former Croatian international Zvonimir Boban is stepping down as a director at the European Football Confederation UEFA. He was brought in as “head of football” in 2021. In a short message on the UEFA website, the organization confirmed on Thursday that both parties are parting ways “by mutual agreement”.

The 55-year-old Boban, who made waves at AC Milan as a creative midfielder, is reportedly leaving UEFA due to a conflict with chairman Aleksander Ceferin. He would not agree with the plans to extend the Slovenian’s mandate beyond the established term. The current UEFA regulations stipulate that a UEFA president can serve a maximum of twelve years, but Ceferin wants to tinker with this with the aim of staying on until 2031. He would then be chairman for fifteen years.

Ceferin came to power in 2016 in the wake of the corruption scandal that forced Michel Platini to resign as UEFA boss. The Slovenian was then re-elected for the first time in 2019. Due to the change in regulations, which Ceferin wants to have approved at a conference in Paris on February 8, the Slovenian hopes that the first three years will not count. He expects that the stipulated twelve years (three four-year mandates) will only start from 2019. Ceferin wants to be able to stand for election again in 2027 for a four-year term.

In a letter quoted by various media, Zvonimir Boban explains that he has spoken out against Ceferin’s plans several times, but was always met with rejection. “Despite my very deep concern and total disapproval, the UEFA president does not consider that there are any legal problems regarding the proposed change, and certainly no moral or ethical ones,” writes the Croat, who also has a past with FIFA under president Gianni Infantino. “He continues to push through his plans with the sole aim of realizing his own ambitions.”
