If Karel Geraerts cannot straighten things out, disaster threatens for Schalke 04. The German traditional club must remain in the 2. Bundesliga at all costs.

Sky Germany reports this. According to the German sports channel, ‘Die Königsblauen’ cannot afford another relegation. Geraerts took over in Germany at the beginning of October, but has only been able to win four of his eleven league games since then. In addition, there are six defeats. Schalke has barely gained one spot since the dismissal of Thomas Reis.

Schalke 04 is currently in 15th place in the standings, with 20 points. The seven-time German champions thus share the last relegation place with Eintracht Braunschweig and Hansa Rostock. However, Geraerts and co have a better goal difference and would currently avoid relegation to the third division. The distance to FC Köln (21) and FC Magdeburg (23) can also be bridged with fifteen match days to go.

If Geraerts could not save the day in Germany and Schalke is relegated again, it may be over for the club that has existed since 1904. According to Sky Germany, the financial situation of ‘Die Königsblauen’ is so bad (a debt of 165 million) that they would not receive a license for the third division and would therefore immediately drop to the Regionalliga West, the fourth level. “The club as it currently exists would be dead in this horror scenario,” it said.

After the arrival of Marc Wilmots in management, one winter transfer was realized. Winger Darko Churlinov came over on loan from Burnley. French defender Fabien Centonze is also said to be on his way from Nantes. A welcome reinforcement as Schalke – still the second most popular German club – conceded the most goals (41) so far in the 2. Bundesliga.

A big test awaits Geraerts this Saturday. His team will then face relegation rival Eintracht Braunschweig in the VELTINS Arena with more than 62,000 seats.

“It’s about much more than three points,” writes Sky Germany, which also doubts the future of the Belgian trainer in Gelsenkirchen. “Geraerts must put a team on the field that can regain the respect of the fans and show that there is still life in the team. Because if we start playing defensively again, the coach will also get into trouble. It is no longer about building market value or giving playing time to young players. It’s all about survival for one of Germany’s biggest football clubs.”
