Brian Riemer about the yellow danger at Anderlecht: “We have already thought about it. It is important to manage this well”

A recurring phenomenon: players taking their fifth yellow card just before the end of the competition. They are also consciously working on it at Anderlecht. Vertonghen took his at the end of the match against Bruges. Leoni, Patris, Stroeykens and Sardella also have four to their name. “It is important to manage those yellow cards well.”

Four players on suspension cards

Every year we see the same scenes again: players who quickly receive their fifth yellow card just before the start of the play-offs. For example, Patris, Leoni, Stroeykens and Sardella have four yellow cards at Anderlecht. During the play-offs, each player starts with a clean slate. Only when they take that fatal fifth in the last match against Kortrijk will they miss the first match of the play-offs. But they would also rather not run that (small) risk.

That is something that every trainer takes into account, and we don’t have to make a fuss about it. This also applies to Riemer: “Of course we know that these players are on one card of a suspension. We’ve already thought about it. It is important to manage this well. Anyone who plays football knows that it is not easy to just get a yellow card. If you do it too deliberately, you might risk getting a red cardboard shoved under your nose. Just as it is not ideal to play with an early yellow card. Moreover, it is not the intention that all four get yellow in the same match. But I won’t get angry if one of those guys gets a yellow card.”

First base plate Gattoni

Jan Vertonghen should no longer worry about a fifth yellow card. The defender went looking for it in the match against Club Brugge and found it. This makes the match against Eupen ideal for giving Federico Gattoni his first starting spot. “I’m very happy that we finally get to see him,” said Riemer. “Federico has a fantastic personality and has a very positive influence on the group. What are his qualities? He is not the biggest, but he does have excellent jumping power.”

“Moreover, he is very athletic, fast and aggressive. A typical South American defender. In the past he has always played in football teams, which means he is above average in possession of the ball. In short, it is the ideal time to drop him into the team. This way he can get used to playing alongside Zeno Debast. Who knows, we might still need him in the play-offs.”

Verschaeren and Delaney fit

Riemer concluded with a medical update of the injured. Verschaeren dropped out in the match against Bruges last Sunday. Nothing too serious. “Yari got a kick that made him a dead leg received,” Riemer explained. “He still had to recuperate for the first two to three days, but he is now training with the group again and is therefore ready to start the competition.”

“Delaney is also completely fit, but he has been on the sidelines longer than we expected. So we have to be a little more careful with him. It seems more likely he’ll get about thirty minutes. We hope to recover Ashimeru and Amuzu after the international break. The season is most likely over for Moussa N’diaye.”
