Not yet finished after the Africa Cup for promises: El Ouahdi gives RWDM victory against Olympique Lyon from Clinton Mata

RWDM concluded its fan day with a 1-0 win against Olympique Lyon. Zakaria El Ouahdi, who missed most of the preparation with RWDM due to his long appearance at the Africa Cup-23, scored the only goal of the match.

RWDM against Olympique Lyon, it was more than just a match against two clubs from the portfolio of the Eagle Football Group. It was the Textor-derby – John Textor has been chairman of both clubs since this year. The duel also between Théo Defourny and Anthony Lopes, his former competitor at his training club. The most suspicious RWDM supporters would even dare to talk about a duel between RWDM and the reason that RWDM has to keep a tight grip on the transfer market for the time being – read: Textor is experiencing difficult times with Lyon financially.

The team from Molenbeek only let one of the provisional four summer acquisitions start against Lyon: Abner Felipe, the 27-year-old left back who came over from SC Farense. The former Brazil youth international couldn’t hide the fact that he wore the shirt of Real Madrid (Castile) for a few years. In the first half, the home team managed to keep their heads above water against Lyon, which, in addition to Clinton Mata, also kicked off boys like Nicolás Tagliafico, Corentin Tolisso and Alexandre Lacazette. The best chance in the first half was perhaps for the home side: Mickaël Biron with a good acceleration on the right, Niklo Dailly crossing from the left, but an unfortunate finish from Théo Gécé.

Afrika Cup –23

After the break, RWDM returned to the field with good initiative, but Dailly soon failed to finish. On the other side, Defourny had to use his best reflexes with a free kick from Mata. However, the opening goal came from RWDM: via the post, the Moroccan youth international, who missed a large part of the preparation due to the Africa Cup -23, made the nets vibrate.

Moments later, the rain fell in buckets in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek. It didn’t rain goals either, and strangely enough neither did concrete chances from the visitors. The substitute visiting goalkeeper Rémy Riou, who was active at Sporting Charleroi in the 2018/19 season, had to stretch with an attempt by Pierre Dwomoh, who also came in. Fifteen minutes later, the home fans could celebrate: a 1-0 win against the number seven in Ligue 1 is a boost in these uncertain times – the Molenbeek core remains very tight less than a week from the season opener against KRC Genk.
