“I regret the statements of the Anderlecht coach and players”: new CEO of the Football Association denounces misconduct during the Brussels derby

Things got out of hand again on Thursday during Union-Anderlecht in the quarter-finals of the Croky Cup. And Piet Vandendriessche, the new CEO of the football association, also saw this. “That hurts my heart,” he said.

One of the first issues that Piet Vandendriessche, the new CEO of the football association, will have to tackle is the problem of fan violence. The RWDM-Eupen match could not be completed on Sunday, and the cup match between Union and Anderlecht was stopped for a while on Thursday.

“It hurts my heart when I see that,” said Vandendriessche. “They are not supporters. It gives our football a negative image. It’s not easy to tackle. It is not a typical Belgian problem. I also hear it from colleagues abroad. Violence, hooliganism and pyrotechnics are increasing all over Europe.”

Unfortunate statements

It may help if players and trainers disapprove of the behavior in clear terms. And not like Anderlecht defender Zeno Debast – “I don’t mind stopping a match” – and coach Brian Riemer – “I understand the frustration of the fans” – yet to say that they understand such hooligans.

“We must do everything to ensure that the match takes place in serene conditions,” Vandendriessche added. “I regret those statements by players and coaches. Throwing cups should be avoided. We don’t want to go there. These are excesses of football that unfortunately cannot be solved with one stroke of the pen.”

“The National Chamber for Civil Exclusions has now handled 158 files and that is progressing very quickly. We want to impose stadium bans, but it is not always easy to know who exactly is involved. This problem is high on the agenda and we will pay a lot of attention to it with the Pro League. But as I said: it is a problem for all countries.” (lvdw)
