Despite the poor results, the German Football Association retains confidence in coach Julian Nagelsmann. “His job is not in question,” assures federal chairman Bernd Neuendorf in a German podcast. “We will only make the evaluation after the European Championship.”

“He must have our full support for the next six months. We’re not going to go back to that. We cannot use problems about the position of the trainer now.”

The 36-year-old Nagelsmann succeeded Hansi Flick in September. He signed a contract until the end of July 2024. Flick was sent off after a 1-4 defeat against Japan, but Nagelsmann made little improvement. He started with a 1-3 win against the United States and a 2-2 draw against Mexico, but defeats followed against Turkey (2-3) and Austria (2-0).

Germany opens the European Championship in their own country on June 14 against Scotland. Hungary and Switzerland are the other opponents in group A. Before then, the German federation wants to schedule a few more practice matches.
